So what is gastric bypass?

This surgery will help you with losing weight by changing how your small intestine and stomach handle the foods you eat. Surgery will make your stomach smaller and that means you’ll need less food to feel full.

Gastric Bypass Surgery

Gastric bypass surgery can make you slim and healthy for life

This is one of the best ways to lose weight since the food you consume won’t be able to travel into certain parts of the stomach and small intestine and that means your body simply cannot absorb all the calories you eat.

This Is What Happens During Surgery

Before going into theatre you will be given general anaesthetic, so you will be fast asleep and won’t feel a thing. There are then two things that happen during the procedure:

  1. Your stomach will be made smaller. The surgeon uses staples and divides the stomach into two sections. The upper section will be the smallest and that’s where your food will go to. This section, called a pouch, is the size of a walnut.
  2. The bypass section involves connecting a small part of the small intestine to the small hole in the pouch to allow your food to travel from the pouch to the small intestine opening. This means you’ll absorb less calories.

There Are 2 Ways A Gastric Bypass Can Be Done

  1. Open surgery – a large cut is made to open your tummy and the bypass is done by working on the small intestine, stomach and all the other organs.
  2. Laparoscope – a tiny camera is placed in the stomach. The surgeon makes about 6 small cuts into the belly and passes the camera through one of the cuts. The camera is hooked up to a monitor and the surgeon watches the monitor to see what is going on in the stomach. Thin surgical instruments are then used to carry out the bypass.

Why Would You Have Gastric Bypass Surgery?

Weight loss surgery is usually necessary if you need to lose a large amount of weight and keep it off with lifestyle changes such as diet and exercise.

Health conditions such as type 2 diabetes as well as high blood pressure are also factors that play a role in needing to lose weight fast.

While weight loss surgery is by no means a quick fix for obesity, you will still need to exercise and diet after the procedure.
