Typically, you will be advised to eat just one cup of food at a time. Your surgeon will also recommend three meals a day and no snacks. Constant snacking will interfere with your efforts to lose weight.

The main thing isn’t really about how many times a day you eat on the gastric bypass diet, but how many calories you consume during the course of a day. Below is a sample menu for three meals and two snacks. By eating small meals regularly throughout the day, you’ll keep your metabolism up which helps you shed the kilos. It also helps you to keep feeling full.

Sample Menu for a Gastric Bypass Diet

This is only a sample menu. Your doctor and gastric bypass team will discuss different options along with gastric bypass side effects to come up with the best plan for you.

Breakfast – one of the following:

  • Protein shake
  • A scrambled egg and one chicken or turkey sausage
  • Two scrambled eggs with a little helping of cheese
  • ¾ cup of oatmeal and one fresh fruit

Lunch – one of the following:

  • A cup of cottage cheese with fresh tomatoes or a fruit
  • ¾ cup of tuna or egg salad with low fat mayo, carrot sticks and four small crackers
  • One portion of grilled chicken with a cup of lettuce and low fat salad cream or dressing

Snack – one of the following:

  • ½ cup of Greek yoghurt
  • One Happy Cow cheese
  • ½ an apple with a tablespoon of peanut butter
  • One slice of cold meat and a slice of cheese

Dinner – one of the following:

  • A slice of thin crust pizza with vegetable or meat topping
  • One portion of grilled fish or chicken with ¼ cup mashed potatoes and ¼ cup vegetables
  • A cup of lentil soup with ½ cup side salad and low fat salad dressing
  • ½ cheeseburger without the roll and ½ cup side salad

Snack – one of the following:

  • ½ cup Greek yoghurt
  • Protein shake
  • Three small pretzels and a slice of cheese
  • A slice of cold meat and a piece of cheese dipped in mustard
